Richard Cummins -
Tech Experience

Richard has wealth of experience in growing businesses and finding solutions to overcome hurdles to achieve core objectives. Richard has demonstrated this with his non-exec board advisory roles over the past 5 years with startups; Audiomob and Translate Culture. Richard has also held Trustee board positions with not-for-profit social impact organisations; DINN and charity; Behind Every Kick and has strong Media & Comms, Marketing, Scale-up, and Tech experience having spent the past 15 years in the industry.


Experience

A digital advertising professional with over 15 years of experience working in the industry for a variety of global corporations including Spotify, Google, Google for Startups, Virgin Media and Base79(startup) where he joined the company as an early stage employee in the startup and played a key role in its international growth, through to acquisition. Roles at these companies have involved working on strategic business decisions with both global brands and tech partners at the forefront of the tech industry.

Richard’s role as an advisor to startups includes growing an audio monetisation startup(Audiomob) from £2m pre-seed to £100m valuation in the period of 2 years.

Google Black Founder Program and Black Angel Group

Established in 2020, Richard was a mentor and advisor to the the Google for Startups Black Founders Program and Fund that has awarded more than $30 million to help Black-led startups in Africa, Brazil, Europe, and the United States secure funding, Richard is a founding member of the Black Angel Group which  is a collective of angel investors from various companies who specialize in investing in and growing seed to Series A startups. 

Richard has held trustee board positions at a social impact organization(DINN) and a Charity named Behind Every Kick

Richard had the responsibility of overseeing the  activities of both organisations and ensuring that they’re operating in accordance with its stated mission and goals. Providing governance and oversight in a variety of areas such as marketing strategy, fundraising and growth. Richard regularly worked with the CEO of the BEK charity and its employees to lend expertise in a varied capacity to ensure values are maintained to the highest standard. 
 

 

Board Positions

Board advisory roles between 2020 - 2022 with Audiomob were focused on the early strategy of the start-ups growth and establishing its position within the ad-tech industry. Richard advised the CEO on market opportunities and reviewed management performance throughout its first 2 years from seed valuation of $10m to Series A $95m valuation - More info


Being an early employee in the startup, Brave Bison(formerly Base79),  Richard was hired to lead, and manage a team of Ad Ops professionals across EMEA, and the US to grow existing revenue, and identify new business opportunities. During the time with the company, Richard gained valuable experience reporting with a dotted line into the founder and CEO. Richard  was instrumental in helping Base79 in achieving a £50m acquisition by Brave Bison in 2014 by working with a variety of network partners and also YouTube to increase revenue via the YouTube partner program by establishing key senior relationships across the Google business


 

Advisory and Mentor Roles

Richard is an advisor and mentor in the tech and entrepreneurship sector to the following organisations:
 

  • UK Black Tech - Board advisory role with UK Black Tech which is an organsiation that exists to improve representation in tech.
     

  • If We Raise - An angel advisor who helps businesses at pre-seed with their business strategy and growth plans
     

  • Digital Catapult and Sony - Programme Mentor on the FutureScope Black Founders Programme, an initiative to support the next generation of UK entrepreneurs and startups in digital entertainment.
     

  • Black Googler Network Lead - Previously held the lead UK position for the Black employee resource group at Google UK. This group exists to ensure diversity, equity and inclusion is at the forefront of a variety of initiatives which impact the lives of Google employees, product and services.
